2022 had more corrugations than the Gibb River Road in WA

Graphic representing a difficult year 2022

Well, here we are, late February and 1/6th of 2023 is already over!

I’ve been meaning to return to writing this blog post for some months now, but due to circumstances outlined below these have not happened as planned. However I’m hellbent on making 2023 more meaningful in terms of writing short and sharp posts that have some relevance to you.

Anyone that knows me well and has interacted with me in 2022 knows that my year had more corrugations than the Gibb River Road in WA (if you don’t know what that is please Google and have a look at some of the photos it’s horrendous and I’ve not actually been there but plan to). Without boring you with the gory details, in 2022 I had four major medical milestones that have taken me away from the business for extended period over the year. In fact, in some ways 2023 started in a similar fashion albeit so far this year it’s just been going to doctors, physio, pathology and x-rays & scans and everything else under the sun they can prod and poke into you to determine what going on. Which I guess is a good thing but boy it is a pain in the butt.

Overall course the economies had a more interesting year than I have in 2022! What with the nine rate rises, combined with a softening market and add to that an economy that is at the very best peaking but probably has actually peaked already. As I write this, last week we saw a jump in unemployment, but we still have a record high inflation rate. I actually think there were already in the downward spiral but the data has not yet caught up. I’ll talk about this in much more detail in a later post.

The other thing would be that anyone who knows me well, would know that I moved to Merimbula in 2019 pre pandemic, and have absolutely no plans to move back to Sydney (why would you?). We enjoy living down here plus working remotely has been great for those that have embraced it (which is pretty much everyone), later this year I am going to (health being okay) come to Sydney at least once a month and try to get to Melbourne as well once a quarter. In fact I will be in Sydney on the week starting 20 March, not sure which day as yet, but based on a Waratah’s versus chiefs game rugby I’ll probably be there Friday I reckon! So if you like to catch up please let me know and we’ll try and book some time in to do just that. I’ve a couple of days of seminars in the middle of the week but otherwise at this stage I have one meeting planned.

You’ll mostly find me these days in boardies and t-shirt but I might pull out the polo’s for the trip to Sydney!

Also, I will be starting a vlog. That is a video log which will be posted up on my new YouTube channel : The Financial Physicist (exciting!) as well the website and my social media shortly after writing or in this case videoing. The plan is to actually do a whole bunch of short articles and then combine them into a newsletter to go out once a month. If you don’t receive it and you see this, nudge me and ask me how it’s going please. I do find when I do these things that actually interact with a whole bunch of people on various topics that is meaningful to them and I, so I quite enjoy doing it when sitting down and finding the time.

Lastly of course we need to talk about expiring fixed rates, and we have been trying to be in front of everything with our clients and negotiating with the banks to get the variable rates down and reviewing their circumstances. If you like to talk about where you’re at certainly drop me a line and I am more than happy to have a conversation with you.

So that’s it for me end of February I look forward to catching up with everyone in the coming weeks and months.
